JOHN ROBB AWARD

John Robb is a very special person to Mt. Vernon swimming. John was relentless in his support for a swimming pool to be built as part of the new Mt. Vernon Junior High School. After the first public vote failed in 1986 he continued his support for a pool facility. In 1988 the community approved the present MVJHS facility along with a pool. John along with Coach Larry Zoller and Mel Gillenwater were the founders of MTV, the Mt. Vernon Swim Team.

John’s two sons, Kevin and Jeff swam for Mt. Vernon High School. Jeff graduated in 1990 and was an Indiana High School State Finalist in the 100 Backstroke. Unfortunately, Jeff never got to compete in the new pool which was completed in 1991. Kevin did get to train and compete in the new facility and was also a state finalist in the 100 backstroke in 1994.

After the graduation of his sons John continued his strong support of Mt. Vernon swimming. He was a familiar face at every home swim meet. In 2002 he started writing articles for the local news papers about the MVHS meets. He was also very active in writing letters to MVHS swimmers to congratulate their achievements and even helped swimmers contact college coaches on scholarship opportunities.

John was the nurturing force for the now successful MTV and MVHS swimming teams. John passed away in 2007.
